New on the Site

We're always making changes to the site, trying to make it more helpful. But this is where we announce the most recent page additions. If you've visited us before and want to know what's changed, take a look here first. And if you can't find what you're looking for, please tell us. We'll either help you find it, or we'll consider adding it to our site.

Expert Voices - (Added June 5, 2009) - "You should never leave a child in an unattended vehicle, even if you only intend to be a few minutes. ....The inside of a vehicle can reach dangerously hot temperatures within a matter of minutes even on days when the temperature outside is mild. Cracking or opening the windows before running in does little to prevent the temperature from rising and provides a false sense of safety for parents....If you find yourself in a situation where a child is locked in your car, you can simply call your local Pop-A-Lock location to notify them of your emergency situation. They will quickly dispatch the Pop-A-Lock employee who is nearest your location to unlock the vehicle at no cost to you."  Learn more from Pop-A-Lock EDU Program.

Expert Voices - (Added March 5, 2004) - Vehicles are so much bigger nowadays, but children are the same small size. Even with all the work I do for Safer Child, and all the safety awareness I like to think I have, I almost ran over a small girl last year. I was driving a large vehicle and was about to back out of a parking spot. I saw a woman go behind me, and I saw a teen-age boy. After they were safely out of the way, I started to back up. Suddenly, my young daughter cried out, "Mommy! There's someone behind you!" I stopped short. Somehow my 5-year-old had glimpsed a small shadow in one of the mirrors. The girl was too young to be walking by herself, but there she was, about 10 or 12 feet behind her mother and brother. There was no way to see her behind the vehicle. I was horrified at the narrowly missed tragedy. I stopped the mother and told her what had almost happened in the hopes she would hold her daughter's hand in parking lots. I now take extra care when backing up to make sure that absolutely no one is lagging behind or dashing ahead of more visible adults. Learn more about this hidden danger from Kids and Cars.

About Your Body - (Added May 14, 2003) - A topic that sometimes gets missed in a child's education is their own body. Many children grow up knowing next to nothing about their body and how it works. It's a shame because the human body is fascinating and also because adults who don't know how their body works do not know how to best take care of it. If you have suggestions for how parents can help educate their children on this topic, please let us know.

International Aid - (Added April 21, 2003) - In response to the large volume of emails we receive from around the world, we have added a page that deals with international humanitarian aid. If you have suggestions for this page, please let us know.

Safer Child has moved! Our new mailing address is P. O. Box 48151, Spokane, WA, 99228-1151. Our email address has not changed, however. It is still lrogers@saferchild.org. We will continue to maintain information for Southeastern Idaho, plus we will begin work on adding information for Washington State, Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, and surrounding areas. If you have information for these areas that you would like us to add, please contact us. Note: Due to the increasing numbers of computer viruses and worms that attach themselves to address books and send themselves automatically, the Safer Child Webmaster must now delete any messages that arrive without appropriate information in the subject line. Please help us help you by taking a moment to put appropriate information in the subject line of your message.

Teaching Mathematics to Young Children - (Added January 27, 2003) - Math is fun! Even toddlers can begin learning the concepts. Look over our suggestions and help your children get off to a good start with math.

Our Policy on Advertising or Endorsing Commercial Products - (Added January 16, 2003)

Staying in Touch - (Added May 23, 2002) - Rituals and traditions are instrumental in keeping parents and children connected. See this page for suggestions on ways to stay in touch.

Safer Child, Inc. now owns both http://www.saferchild.org and http://www.saferchild.com. Safer Child, Inc. is still a nonprofit organization with federal 501(c)(3) status (which typically is signified with a .org suffix). However, we also have secured the .com suffix in order to help prevent confusion among our audience members.

Check out these pages and see if your thinking could benefit from some adjustment.
